‘Holy cow!’. Damn it. Those words escaped my lips before I could stop them.
‘What was that?’ he asked with much concern.
‘Nothing’, I took in a deep breath to recover.
‘Hope I didn’t startle you?’
‘Hell yea you did. Can’t you see how fine you are? I could just hug and squeeze you and never let go. Do you go around making ladies feel like this?’ I busted out in my mind. ‘Not really’. I said to him. Controlling the thought this time.
‘My name is Jack’, he stretch out an arm.
‘Why are guys this fine always named Jack? Who's responsible for this name game anyway?' My mind seem to be hyperactive ever since Hercules showed up. 'Laly’, I took the arm. When we touched, I felt a current fire through me. That kind you have when you touch a naked boiler when plugged to the power source. That was a connection you only experience once in a life time. And honestly I thought you could only see that in movies. I’ve actually heard of it but I thought it was a myth. You can’t know it until you feel it. It’s better experienced than expressed. Yet it felt so warm that I wanted to hold him longer.
‘Please do excuse me’, he said and walked up to the cab driver that was waiting for him some meters away from my car, paid him off and came back. ‘If it won’t be a bother, I would love to do ‘my’ work’. He pointed to the jack I had in my hand and smiled.
‘I would be grateful’.
‘Ok then’.
‘Hope you wouldn’t mind if I took them off’, he gestured to his suit as he said that.
‘Take everything off son of Zeus!’ My mind again! ‘Please feel free’.
When he took off his suit, the white shirt said something to me. It said ‘I’m covering a great body’. Then he went to work, I don’t know how long I stared at him while he worked but I really stared. I couldn’t just resist it. Who would? Smiles.
Just a few minutes he started working on the tire, the clouds screamed at us. The weather report never said anything about this on my app. They lied. The rain poured down like they were provoked. By the time he was done fixing the spare, he was drenched.
‘Please come in let me get you a new set of clothes’, I said from inside.
‘Don’t bother. I’ll simply go home and change. I still have time’
‘That would be so ungrateful of me. Please come in. I insist’.
‘But I’m drenched’
‘Don’t worry. Allow me to do that for you’.
All through the time we drove, we were chatting away like we had known each other way back. He was a very interesting person with a very good sense of humor. He made me laugh so hard that for a moment I forgot I just met him a while ago.
He was a system analyst, a programmer, a writer, a content manger and a blogger. He even told me he’s a good chef. ‘Until certified by mua, you can’t be as good as they say you are’, I had told him.
But one question kept ringing in my head ‘Is he married?’ But if he was, he would have been wearing a ring. That thought haunted me. But consciously I ignored it. I was really enjoying the moment.
He was still wet by the time we got to one of my boutiques. I really didn’t want him to know I own the place. So I went in first and told the sales girls to pretend they didn’t know who I was. I went to the door and gestured on him to come in.
Waiting patiently on the couch, my curiosity nearly got the better part of me to go up and ‘accidentally’ bump into him in the dressing room. That was crazy and I do crazy. But I won with a thread line margin.
When he came out, I couldn’t believe my eyes.
‘My God! You look good’. I couldn’t just hold them anymore. My mind won this time.
‘Thanks to you’. He smiled back at me.
‘Naaa. I should be the one thanking you’. That smile! It was like the sun on a rainy day.
I offered to drop him off but he refused. I persuaded and even begged but he would not let me.
‘You’ve done more than enough Miss Lally. It would be ungentlemanly of me to still want more’. He insisted. So I let him win.
As he said his final thank you and started walking towards the door, I knew I would regret it if I never saw him again. But just as I was about calling out to him, he stopped by the door, turned around and walked back to me.
‘Hope it’s not out of place if I asked for your number? I know we just met and it would not speak well of me but I’m willing to take that chance.’
‘It would have been out of place if you didn’t’. My mind again. ‘Of course not. It would be my pleasure’. I wrote my numbers on a piece of paper and gave it to him. ‘Those are my personal numbers’. Please do call and let me know you’ve arrived safely’. But want I actually meant was “I love your voice Jack. It is romantic. Please call me”
‘No problem Miss Laly. And that’s mine. ’ He handed me his card.
‘Enough with the Miss. Please call me Laly’
‘Ok Miss Laly. Sorry, Laly. See you around and do have a lovely day’. He said and walked out.
THE OFFICE
I got to the office and Debby had that ‘I’m going to kill you and dance on your grave’ look.
‘The whole board has been waiting. What happened?’
‘I’ll tell you everything Miss Inquisitive. Let’s finish the interview first.’
‘And I’ll kill you if you don’t’, she said and gave me that ‘You had better not leave any juicy detail out’ look.
‘Don’t worry I will’.
I was about conducting an important interview for the company. A branch was about to be open in Canada and we needed more staff. And as the MD, I needed people who would be able to take the company to another level. People who would pay attention to details and value human lives. My parents always said that the foundation of the company is based on compassion, love and respect for human lives. They believe that everyone has the right to live their dreams. So I needed people who had the same mindset as my parents.
The interview was schedule to hold on the fifth floor and we were already late. So it wasn't a surprise the way we rushed at the elevator as if that was its last trip up. Just as the doors were about to close, someone said ‘Please hold . . .’ But it was already shut and sincerely the patience I had wasn’t well fed. But something happened when I heard the voice, my heart skipped and my palm felt sweaty. I suddenly felt a presence. I had never experienced this before. It felt strange but I loved the feeling.
‘Who was that?’ I had asked Debby.
‘Some guy. And he is hot. Like steaming hot. I would marry him straight away if he asked me’.
‘Deb!’
‘You know me’, she said and we bursted out with laughter.
Almost at the door of the hall the interview was to take place, Sid caught up to me.
‘Laly, why have you refused to take my calls or return my messages? What’s going on?’
‘Can we not do this now? As you can see I have an interview to conduct. Let's talk later’.
‘Come on Laly, you always give me an excuse each time we see’.
‘Sid, let’s talk later. Please’. Then I walked away.
For as long as I can remember, Sid has always been on my neck. He wanted us to go out but there was just something I didn’t like about him. He was a ‘me’ person. He had a good physique, cool accent and an 'ok' personality. But I still wouldn’t go out with someone that puts himself first before others. I don’t do selfish.
‘Good morning Miss Lara’, the board chorused like it was rehearsed.
‘Morning. Are all the interviewees ready?’
‘Yes Miss Lara’, Mr. Ifiok confirmed.
‘Ok, let’s have them. Remind me again. How many candidates do we have?’
‘Three ma'am. It was really hard selecting them but we had no choice than to reject others. But finally we came up with these three’.
‘How many positions do we have available?’
‘Two ma'am’.
‘So we need two, not three’.
‘Yes ma'am’
‘Glad we’re on the same page here. So, let’s do this’.
When the first candidate came in, I nearly jumped out of my skin. 'Holy cow!' It was Jack.
