LARA McKING: EPISODE 4:- MY RAINBOW

With the strength of Superman breaking through the walls to rescue Louise Lane, I broke the silence. I looked at Sid with a straight face.

‘Mr. Sid, could you excuse us? I have a meeting with Mr. Jack’

‘I just wanted you to look at these papers’, he said.

‘I will do that as soon as I’m through with Mr. Jack’.

‘Ok. Please do excuse me’. He said and worked to the door. Then he turns around and looks at Jack. Then slowly, he walks out.

‘He hates me. I don't even know the guy and he already hates me’, Jack said, making a funny face.

‘How can you tell?’

He made that ‘Oh please don’t be naïve’ face. I just smiled.

‘Please do have a seat’

‘Thanks. I like umm. . . this one’, he said. Pointing to a sofa.

For a moment there I was lost. He went over to the sofa and tried lifting it.

‘What are you doing?’ Surprise and confusion took hold of my face.

‘You said ‘have a seat’ so I like this one. It would really look nice in my one room apartment’.

Then I got it. I laughed like I was controlled remotely.

‘I like your sense of humor. Are you always this funny?’

‘Not really. I’m off on Mondays, sometimes though. Unless I have an emergency. The seriousness on peoples' faces on Mondays scares me’.

‘You make it sound like it’s a job’.

‘It is a job! I’m always at work to make people smile. And I always know what to say. Except when I’m with someone as beautiful as you’.

I laughed out loud. What is this guy?

‘Are you flattering me?’, I asked as I sat on my chair. He sat opposite me.

‘I guess. Is it working? ’

‘You need to try harder. The sweet talks don't move me’. Shut up Lara, this one does. I told myself the truth.

‘I knew it! I should have listened to her’

‘What?! What are you talking about? Who didn’t you listen to?’

‘Adora’

I swear I would have called me Miss Jealous, because I was. Who is Adora?

‘You see, a wise lady told me in the morning when I was having breakfast that I was going to meet a beautiful lady today. And that if I wanted to make her smile, I should tell her I like her hair first. Then go ahead to flatter her’.

‘She must be a wise lady. But you didn’t listen to her, did you’.

‘Yea! I mean, no I didn’t. That’s why I feel so terrible about it. But not to worry. I’m going to fix it’.

‘Fix it? How do you plan on doing that?’

‘By telling you I love your hair’.

‘Is that the wise lady I hear?’

‘No. That’s just me. And I mean it. It smells good too'.

'How can you even tell? You're yards away from me now'.

'I don't need to be near you to know your hair smells good. I know sweetness when I come close to one'.

'Define sweetness'.

'Sweetness is when you meet a beautiful lady wearing a Clive Christian. That bracelet must be more than five years old. I'm guessing it was your mother's, judging from the looks of it. I also know your purse and suit are Italian. I love those things you did with your nails. Those dots are not easily spotted but they're beautiful. And your heels? Definitely Gucci.

My jaw actually dropped. I was shocked, surprised and impressed all at once. He practically gave me a detailed description of everything I had on. One hundred percent.

'What are you? How come you know all that? Are you a psych?'

'Not really. But I see everything. That's my curse'.

'You sure do. But hey! That's not a curse. It's a gift. You should use it well'.

'Yes your highness. I'll definitely do that.

I just met the guy and he's already registered me in his mind. I wonder what happens when he starts working here.

'I also came to give you this’.

He handed me a piece of diamond.

‘This looks familiar. Wait a minute! This is my earing. How did you…?

‘You dropped it this morning’.

‘And you brought it back?!

'Yes ma'am I did'

'But how did you know you were going to see me again?’

‘Adora told me’.

Stop already! Mention that name one more time and I swear I’m going to throw my Gucci heels at you. I wish I could say that out loud.

‘And what else did she tell you?’

‘She said I was going to help a damsel in distress and fall for her’

I liked the sound of that.

‘Oh she did?!’

‘Yea’.

‘What else did she say?’

‘That I was going to succeed in the interview and that I was going to feel helpless before the damsel in distress.’

Wow! Music to my ears. Is this guy trying to flirt with me? I may not know but I was really enjoying it. Apart from the part where he keeps calling Adora.

‘Is your ‘Adora’ psychic?’ I made sure I showed my disapproval of the name leaving my lips as I stressed it.

‘Not really. But she’s gifted. Very gifted. Sometimes I think she can even see the future. And I must say she’s very beautiful’.

‘I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that’.

‘But I did’.

‘Holy cow! Did I say that out loud?!’

‘Yes you did'.
'I'm so sorry. I didn't mean it like that'
'That's ok. Many people get jealous of her when I talk about her. But you’ll come to love her when you meet her’

‘You think?!’

‘No. I know.

'Don't be so sure mister'.

'Do you want to bet on that?’

I thought for a while, considering the fact I would never like her, I agreed to it.

‘So what’s the catch?’ I asked.

‘If I win, I take you out for dinner’.

‘And if I win?’

‘I’ll give up my appointment. But I know I’m going to win’

‘Don’t be so sure of yourself Mr. Jack. And don’t let me fool you. I don’t loose’.

‘Well, this is going to be a first for you’.

He said that with so much assurance and sealed it with a smile. This guy had no idea who he was dealing with.

‘Defeat is not so bad when you get to know her sometimes Miss Lara.

‘Really?’ I said smiling.

‘Most definitely’,

‘And please call me Laly’.

‘Can I?’

‘If I recall correctly, the guy that helped me fix my tire this morning called me that’.

Smiling he said ‘That was before he knew who you are’

‘But that doesn’t change anything’.

‘Seriously? Are you kidding me right now? Lara McKing? 'The' Lara McKing? My dear it changes everything’.

‘No it doesn’t. Ok, let’s just say you never knew me. Let’s pretend I’m not Lara McKing. Let’s play pretend’.

He made the face Pinky would make in ‘Pinky and the Brain’. That cartoon made me laugh.

‘Hmmm. I can do that. But didn’t your mom ever tell you never to talk to strangers and play pretend at the same time?’

‘She did. But she’s not here. Is she?’

‘Ssshhh. Keep your voice down. The walls have ears’, He said, putting a finger over his lips.

‘Ok,’ I whispered. ‘So who are you stranger?’ Still whispering.

‘The guy that wished he had met you long before now’. As he said that, he looked straight into my eyes. Whatever he was doing, it was working on me.

I smiled. ‘Where was he?’

‘You don’t want to know. Trust me’

‘Don’t be so sure. I would love to’

‘Well, that would be birthed another day’. As he said that, he stood up. I hated what he was about doing. Leaving!

‘Very well. I actually wanted to say congratulations for the job. I hope you’ll like it here with us’.

‘I will. Believe me’. As he said this, he winked at me.

‘And how do you know? Oh wait! Don’t tell me. Let me guess. Adora right?’

‘Yea. Adora’. He smiled again.

‘Do have a lovely day Lara McKing’.

'You too Mr. Jack', I said, stretching out my hand for a shake. But he took it gently and kissed it twice.

As he walked to the door, he looked back, smiled and exhaled. I smiled back. Then he said 'My Rainbow'. Those words! I know those words. Brain, don't fail me now. Think!

When he left, I felt this warmth inside. It felt good and I loved it. Few seconds later, Debby came in.

‘Lara McKing, start talking!’
