Debby sat down and looked at me.
‘What do you want to hear?’
‘Everything. You now owe me two episodes. Start talking young lady’.
‘Or what?’
‘I’ll call him and tell him you can’t stop thinking about him’. As she said this, she brought out her phone and started dialing a number. I wasn't sure it was Jack's but I wasn't sure I wanted to find out either.
‘You’re bluffing’.
‘Really? Watch me’.
I wasn’t sure whether to believe Debby or not. But one thing I know her for sure is that she wasn’t a bluffer. So I did the unthinkable. I dived at her like a rugby player. It was crazy to see a CEO of a multinational struggling on the floor with her Personal Assistance. It was really crazy. She was the one person that would always bring out a part of me no one should see.
‘Debby, what’s your malfunction’.
‘One word young woman: Don’t dear me!’
‘That’s three words’
‘Exactly!’ She said, making the spongebob face.
After a while of struggling, I managed to get the phone from her. When I looked at it, I saw the number and it was really Jack's.
'So you were really dialing him? Are you insane?'
'Lara McKing, You shouldn't mess with me. You know me'.
'Yea! I know you. My wacko PA'.
'Wacko? Girlfriend I'm a realist'.
'A crazy realist. The crazy defines you'.
'You're just jealous Lara McKing. You can't just be me?'
'Be you?! That was your crazy thought as usual right?'
'Hell no! It's the truth'
'Really? And why's that?'.
'Shall we start with the fact that Mr. Jack 'kills' you or let's just skip that and consider the fact that you're a scared little daddy's girl?'
'I'm not scared. I have . . .'
'A lion's heart. I know. That's what you always say. But you're a scared chicken when he's around'. Then she started making chicken sounds and mimicking me.
'Deb, that guy is made up with something strange'.
'Two words my friend. Flesh, bone and cartilage'.
'That's four words'.
'Exactly!'
'And your point?'
'Do I need to prove a point to mess with you? Messing with you is fun without one'. She said, laughing hysterically. I couldn't help but join her.
'But seriously Deb, I feel something whenever I talk with him'.
'Something like what?'
'I don't know. It's strange to me. Really strange. He's like a lost memory in my head.
'Make sense young lady. Don't keep me in suspense. That's my job'. She takes a seat. 'Now tell me what really happened'.
'Ok. We just talked. He's a charmer'.
'Yea! I think we've established that fact. What really happened. Why do you think he's like a lost memory in your head?'
'He said something strange. But I know I've heard it before'.
'And you're going to tell me what it is?'
'He said 'My Rainbow'.
'And that is suppose to make sense to me? Am I the rain maker?'
'I remember something like that but I can't remember where or when I heard it'.
'Dont worry you will. Your mind's sharp'.
'Thanks dear. I hope so too'.
'You're welcome. What would you have done without me?'
'A lot'.
'Ok. Men . . .'
'But don't tel me to mention them'.
'You think you're smart right?', she said laughing.
'You know I am'.
'Now tell me something', she whispered. 'Did he kiss you?'
'Deb! You twisted little girl'.
'What? He must be stupid if he didn't'.
'He didn't but he's not stupid'. I couldn't help laughing. 'But that wouldn't have been a bad idea after all'.
'You see! You know the twisted one is right'. She smiled.
‘But hold on a sec. How did you get his number?’
‘How did I get his number? Are you seriously asking me that? Girlfriend, I am the James Bond of this company. Nothing goes on without me knowing about it’.
‘Sorry madam, but tell me. How in God’s name did you get it?!'
‘Forget the process. You really don’t want to know’.
‘Ok. But at least give me a mustard seed size info’
‘Young lady, if I told you, I'll be needing something else from you. You want that? Because I got a long list’.
'You're adopted!'
'And I love you too'.
‘Why can’t I ever triumph over you for once eh, Debby? Why?’
‘That’s because I am Debby. Winning me can only happen the day rats start winning Grammys’, she said that amiss laughter. ‘Now start talking’.
I told her everything and how I felt and what the adrenalines were doing to me when I was with him. She listened as though her life depended on it.
THE McKING'S MANSION
Finally! I love the peace I always feel whenever I drive into the garage. Today I felt a double measure of that peace. I quickly went upstairs, took a shower and had dinner. Then I took out his card and looked at it, like I was looking for clues. Should I call him or not?
I was in this state of mind when my phone rang. Private number.
‘Hello is that Lara McKing?’ a male voice said from the other end.
‘Yes. Who is this please?’
‘Boom! Gotcha! Who were you expecteing yong lady’, Debby said. Using her real voice.
‘Debby, what is your own na? Haba!’ I said laughing.
‘Don’t worry Laly. He’ll call’.
‘And how do you know that?’
‘I just know. But if he doesn’t, don’t stress’.
‘Ok. I’ll try to be calm’.
‘You have no choice. But if he doesn’t call, he’ll regret it’.
‘Lol. Aiit. No problema margarita. Good night dear'.
'Night Laly'.
It’s been a long time since that incident but that day will forever remain fresh in my mind. I wouldn’t give it up for anything. And now this cheap girl is busy throwing herself at him. Debby and I nicknamed her Delilah. She knew how to make men look her way so much that she sickens me. Today she went too far. I couldn’t think straight. All I wanted was to hurt her so bad that the thought of it alone hurt me.
I would have relieved her of her duty a long time ago but she is my dad’s best friend’s daughter and she was very good at her job. In my dad’s presence, she was an angel, but when it came to issues like this, she grows horns and a tail, with a pitchfork in her hand. I hated Delilah. And now she wants to take the only thing that makes sense to me? No way! Her tricks won't fly this time.
TWO MONTHS LATER : THE OFFICE
I can't believe two months have passed since that day. I've been able to manage without Jack and I must say it has not been easy. We'll talk on the phone for hours. I always felt safe just hearing his voice. We were becoming very good friends and I loved it.
But I wanted more. I needed Jack here with me. So I pulled some strings and before you could exhale, he was back in Nigeria and some other person was transferred to Canada. Nothing could describe my joy when I went to pick him up at the airport. But he insisted he wouldn't want me to know where he lives. I felt so bad. I would have followed him but as he got into a cab, he made me promise not to.
'I wasn't going to follow you'.
'Yes you were'.
'No I was not'.
'Laly, you're a terrible lier you know that?'
'Come on Jack. I just want to know where you live. We've been friends for a while now and I still know nothing about you', I said disappointed.
'But you know my name'.
'And that's all I know. Your name. But I want more'.
'And you will get it. Not just yet. I promise you that. Ok'.
'Ok'. I felt like crying. But when he took me in his arms and hugged me, nothing else mattered. It felt good.
'Young woman! Come back to earth', Debby's voice echoed.
'I'm here'.
'Your appointment with the Browns is by 3. The Cassidy's Palace is by 5 and . . .'
'Cancel everything'.
'Come again'.
'I said cancel everything. All meetings should be canceled or rescheduled. I need to do something more important'.
'Ok. Right on it', Debby said and started making calls. When she was done, she said 'Let's go'.
'And where are we going?'
'To Jack's of course'.
'How did you . . .'
'I am Debby remember? Now get up'.
Jack was still in his office wen we left and headed straight to his house. Trust Debby, she already knew where he lived. When we got there and walked to the front door, I suddenly felt I shouldn't be doing this. Jack was in the office and I was here. What was I even looking for here? What was I thinking? Debby saw the look on my face and held my hand.
'Its too late to turn back now Laly. Ring the bell'.
As I was about ringing the bell, the door opened and I saw a cute little girl standing before me. She was about nine. She was so cute I wanted to kiss her cheeks.
'You're late!' Was the first thing that came out of her mouth.
Debby and I looked at each other.
'Late?' I asked.
'Yea. And don't look so surprise. You look funny but beautiful too. Do come in'.
I wasn't sure if my legs had minds of their own because they responded to her against my will. When we got in, I just fell in love with the place. Jack has a sense of style.
'Please do make yourselves comfortable'. She said.
'What can I offer you?'
We were so stunned that we chorused 'Nothing'.
'Believe me Lara McKing, you will need something to drink. Maybe a glass of water'.
She knew me!
'What can I do for you?' She said, sitting down. We did the same.
I had to look at Debby before speaking. I was freaking out already.
'We're here to see Jack'.
'Why?'
'We needed to collect some documents from him'.
'Really?! I might be nine but I'm not stupid. Jack is in the office right now and you're here. And as far as I know, there's only one Jack who lives here and works for you. Try something else Miss Beautiful.
'Seriously, who are you and how old did you say you are again?'.
'Nine. And don't worry, you'll get to know who i am shortly. But you've not told me why you're here'
'I came to see Jack'.
'That you left in the office? You're kidding right?'
'Can I have that glass of water now please?'
'I told you you were going to need it. Be right back'.
Immediately she went out, I dragged Debby by the hand.
'We need to get out of here'.
'Hell no. I want to see where this goes. I'm enjoying it'.
'I'm getting tortured by a nine year old and you're enjoying it?'.
'Someone else should mess with you for a change. I shouldn't be the only one doing the whole work you know', she said smiling.
'Remind me to kill you when we get back'.
Don't worry. I will'.
When the little girl came back with a glass of water, she was smiling. She looked even cuter. I could sense a part of Jack in this little girl. Is she his daughter? Is that why he doesn't want me to know where he lives. I had so many questions running briskly in my head.
She looks so much like him. Her smiles and everything. She offered me the water, still smiling.
'Hi'. A voice came from behind. When we turned, we saw a very beautiful young woman. About my age. This must be Adora. I now see why Jack talks about her so much. She was really beautiful. She came and sat beside the little girl and they started whispering.
'Hello! Remember us? We're still here. What's going on here. Who are you two?'
'Lara McKing, we're Jack's family', the little girl said.
Was this why he didn't want me to know about him? I felt like dying. The ground started moving. And I was suddenly on the ceiling. That was the last thing I remember.
